To give you some idea – before the campaign started, my book’s ranking at Amazon.com was sitting at over 900,000. Right this very moment it is at 1,882 in Books. It did get as high as 1,127 but has gone back down again and this will be because other books are selling there as well. But I believe that’s a great difference and I’m now at the right end of the book rankings, instead of at the bottom.Â

This has been a fantastic learning exercise and exciting. A number of things have come out of it. I’m going to be profiled in a US women’s publication online in August. I’ve had many people contacting me via forums, blog comments and emails to encourage me and to ask for more information. The book is now listed on a great number of blogs and websites – by people who didn’t contribute gifts but wanted to join in the fun. I’ve discovered a blog that picks up new books from Amazon and promotes them. Google Alert has been very useful to keep me informed of new listings on the web. Oh, and there’s also a very worthwhile site to join, if you’re an author that will give you daily, weekly or monthly updates on the ranking of your book at Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Very minimal cost. $10USD a year. http://www.booksandwriters.com Worth the investment!

I was at the first day of a conference for the National Speakers Association of Australia today and we were prompted to think about our ‘brand’ as speakers. It didn’t take long for me to immediately think back to an event late last year.

I was supporting a client at a seminar she was running – her event, not mine. In my day ‘job’ I’m a Virtual Assistant and provide PA and admin support to a number of clients. At this particular event I was handing out nametags and welcoming guests as they arrived. A couple came forward, gave their names, received their name badges and walked back off again. A lull had come in between arrivals and I noticed this couple whispering to one another. Then the woman turned back and came towards me. Her next words took me by surprise.

‘You’re that ‘rubies lady’, aren’t you?’ she asked. ‘I’ve read your book. So has my husband’ and then they both proceeded to tell me various parts of the book they really related to.
Up till that point in time I’d not thought of myself in that way before as the ‘rubies lady’ and only thought about it now and then… until today.

I have been slowly building my speaker’s profile and suspect after this conference weekend that will increase.

Going back to that day, the fact that her husband had read it particularly interested me as I had written this book for women and yet I have since heard from several men who have read and enjoyed “Worth More Than Rubies”. Guess I shouldn’t prejudge – God led me in the writing of this book and he knows who needs to read it.

I just went down to the post office to check for mail. As I walked along the pavement a young lady was walking towards me, her head down, reading the book in her hands. She must have just come off the train – there was a fair bit of foot traffic around. I don’t know why I was watching this lady but as she got closer, I noticed the book was moving up and down in her hands with the movement of her walking. And in a flash, as the book moved up momentarily, I saw the cover of her book and my heart jumped! The book was mine – “Worth More Than Rubies”.

I stopped and watched her as she moved further down the road away from me, wondering if she even realised she had just walked past the author. Probably not. How cool was that?
