Working From Home – a Stigma?

My recent post and story about Kylie Short has brought to light an article Kylie discovered with the Independent Street in the US. It talks about the perception that if you’re working from home, you’re not really working. I thought that mindset died some years ago but it appears not to be the case. Come on people! I run a fulltime business from home and participate in online conferences and seminars using technology that many corporates I know didn’t even know existed or was possible. Who’s living in the dark ages here? Not me!

Perhaps readers need to see this MSNBC report from May 2007. It might open a few eyes for some!

  1. Another thing of interest to note in this situation is that my husband, a man, has a mobile office setup, home office setup, and a traditional office at his place of employment. Never is there any question from others about whether or not he’s working. It’s simply, “WHERE are you working from?” at the moment he’s asked.

  2. I come across this mindset often. I know so many Mums who struggle with this and are constantly asked to help out at school or wherever “because you’re home”.

  3. Yes, this viewpoint is interesting. One of my friends was surprised that I hadn’t sacked my cleaner now that I was working from home! I reminded her that I was working full-time even though it was from home.
